Vic Ramus was born on May 9, 1921 in San Francisco, and attended Polytechnic High School. From 1939 to 1943, he played as a running back for the Dons, and at 5’ 9”, 165 lbs., was often positioned as a scatback. Following graduation, Ramus joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II, and served in the South Pacific at Iwo Jima. Following his discharge at the rank of Captain, he played for the San Francisco Clippers football team (PCPFL) from 1943 to 1948. In 1947 he was named the Clippers Head Coach, and in 1948 served as an Assistant Coach.

In 1934, Ramus established the Horseshoe Tavern on Chestnut Street, in the Marina district of San Francisco, which he called his second living room. After 38 years, Ramus sold the Tavern to three patrons. Herb Caen called him “about as San Francisco as one can get without turning into the Ferry Building (SFChronicle).”
