Arnold "Arnie" Sambel

Arnold “Arnie” Sambel was born on December 3, 1967, in Columbus, IN, and attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, where he played basketball and baseball.  At 6’ 1”, 195 lbs., he played outfielder for the Dons. He won All-Conference Honors in 1990 along with MVP in his senior year. He ranked in the top 5 in several defensive categories and averaged .340 in hitting, including 17 doubles, and 55 home runs that same year. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Marketing from USF in the class of 1990.
 
He was selected twice as a Left Fielder by the Kansas City Royals: in the 36th Round of the MLB June Amateur Draft in 1989, and in the 28th Round in 1990. He played one season for the Eugene Emeralds. His best game was against Bend, when he went 2 for 2. in his last game against Boise on July 8th, he went 0 for 1 in a pinch-hit performance. 
 
In July, 1990 he retired from professional baseball. His Eugene manager, Paul Kirsch, told the Eugene Register-Guard, that “his heart was not in it.” His son followed him into college sports,
but in track and field at Cal Poly.
