James Begley was born in San Francisco, on September 19, 1902. At 5’ 4”, 145 lbs, he was nicknamed “Imp”, but was an early star for the Grey Fog basketball team, playing guard and forward. At that time, all of the athletic programs were called the Grey Fog, until they were renamed the Dons in November 1931, after Saint Ignatius College transitioned to USF in 1930. He finished his career at Saint Ignatius at 14-4 in 1924, and was the leading scorer for the team in wins over the Olympic Club and Santa Clara, averaging 10.0 PPG.
 
Following his 1924 season, he transitioned professionally to the sport of baseball, where he was signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a second baseman. Batting and throwing right-handed, he had one hit, two walks and scored a run in his two career major League games. He played one year for the Reds.
