Patrick Joseph Murphy was born March 17, 1949 in San Francisco, CA, and attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory. He attended USF in the class of 1971. His father was a member of the Olympic Club, so he was able to join at the age of eight, and started learning golf from his father at age of 12. He played golf for the Dons, and in his freshman year, played in three tournaments with the Golf Team: the Far Western Invitational, the United States Collegiate Tournament, and the Western Intercollegiate, He also played in dual matches, approximately 10-12 events per year for his four years. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor's in Business.

He received an MBA from the University of Santa Clara in 1973. He was the owner of Shamrock Produce Company in San Francisco with two other partners, beginning in 1973, until his retirement in 2012.

He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1985. He is credited with helping to revitalize the golf program at USF in 1978. When USF was considering giving up the golf program at that time, Murphy successfully advocated for its continuation along with Richard Nicolopulos, the USF Golf Coach at the time. He was a member of the Olympic Club beginning in 1957, and served on the Board of Directors as Vice President from 2005 to 2007.  His two brothers have also served as Board members.
