Paul Thomas Golden was born on March 22, 1919 in San Francisco. He attended USF in the class of 1940 and played both rugby and soccer for the Dons. He was a member of the athletic Circle Block Club, and a member of the ROTC. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946 as a Lieutenant Colonel during World War II. He used to swim in the San Francisco Bay with Father Dullea and Tom Rice, a colleague in the Hall of Fame.

Following the war, he attended Stanford Medical School, and had a medical practice in Salinas, CA. The Golden family established a scholarship at USF to be awarded to a student with an interest in soccer and the arts and sciences, in honor of Paul’s brother Mark who died in World War II.
